As part of last year’s Best Foods Baker’s Partner competition, 10 operators were selected from the 2017 lucky draw program to go to Hokkaido – the land that’s known for gorgeous nature and incredible food culture – from 25 to 29 March 2018. One stop on this trip was to Otaru, a beautiful, small harbour town that’s home to some of the best Japanese dessert cafés. Watch the video below and read on to see the highlights of this awesome trip.

One of Otaru’s most well-known dessert spots is Le TAO, recognised as a true heaven for dessert lovers. This café is so popular, it’s been said that you can’t tell others that you’ve been to Hokkaido if you didn’t pay this café a visit.
Le TAO prides itself on only using high-quality ingredients that are all locally-produced in Hokkaido. One of one of their all-time bestsellers is the Double Fromage Cheesecake. Its rich texture melts in your mouth, filling it with amazing flavour and happiness.
The next stop was Ishiya, the famous producers of Shiroi Koibito cookies. The factory has visitors from around the world every day, and there is an entire museum in the facility that displays the company’s history and chocolate-making process alongside displays of chocolate packages and British teacup collections. The winners also had the chance to join special workshops and design their own cookies. The entire factory is a testament to Japanese uniqueness and their attention to detail throughout the production process.
Cake workshop and the end of a great trip
At the end of the trip, Best Foods organised an exclusive Japanese cake workshop with the aim of helping the winners learn better techniques and gain inspiration. Hopefully they will go back recharged and filled with happiness, inspiration and new techniques that they can adapt to take their own business to the next level.
